Flooring Installation Prep

Follow these steps to get your space ready for new carpet or hard flooring installation

You’ve made the exciting decision to update your home or business with new carpet, hardwood, luxury vinyl or tile flooring. Now is the time to prepare for a successful installation and get your space ready for the transformation.

Select your flooring

If you haven’t already, it’s time to choose a type of new carpet or a hard-surface flooring option. While the possibilities may seem endless, our expert sales staff are trained in helping you determine the best flooring solution for your needs, as well as the option that best suits your style preferences and existing décor. At HOM, we provide ongoing sales training for all of our Retail Sales Associates, with many of them, as well as our expert estimators, certified by the National Wood Flooring Association. We also have professional designers on staff to help you with your project.

With busy schedules, time is important to all shoppers. You can choose to shop from the comfort of your own home with our Shop at Home service—where we can bring samples to your home, visit one of our 7 convenient Metro Minneapolis/St.Paul showroom locations, or for remnants, closeouts and one-of-a-kind items, see the HOM Flooring Outlet Center in Coon Rapids.

Set up an estimate request

Once you’ve selected a flooring option, the next step is to schedule an estimator visit. A professional estimator will come to your home to evaluate your space and determine measurements. Our estimating staff will assess your home to make sure that your flooring project is estimated, planned and installed to your expectations.

Schedule installation

We offer many of the most sophisticated and unique flooring products available, and we require and provide ongoing training to our installers to ensure they have the knowledge and skills necessary to handle always-changing product designs and specifications.

Prepare your floors

Before your installers can start on your new floor, the room(s) must be properly prepped. Here are some steps you can take before the installers arrive to help ensure a smooth process. First, remove all small items from the areas in which flooring will be installed, including items in closets, artwork and other breakables, as well as window treatments. It needs to be determined before the day of installation whether you or the installer will be removing furniture, other large items and the previous flooring and subfloor, if necessary. Finally, all floors should be thoroughly cleaned before the new carpet, hardwood or other flooring is installed.

Follow these simple steps to prepare for a new flooring installation, and you’ll soon be walking on the cushy new carpet or on-trend hard-surface flooring of your choice.
