Design with Dining in Mind

Set up your dining set to meet your meal-time needs and look great in your space.

Setting up a dining space (or several) in your home is often easier said than done. While any old dining table and chair may suffice, you want a dining set that will enhance your space and work for your family and guests. From small kitchen table sets to standard 5-piece dining sets, 7-piece dining sets, a versatile dining set with bench, and large farmhouse style dining tables, the options are plenty. You’ll want a dining set that seats the right number of people, fits the footprint of your dining space and enriches your design style. Follow our tips and tricks for designing with dining in mind.

A dining set with bench can provide versatile seating for your guests.

Dining sets are a great way to “cheat” the system—many of them are already designated for formal dining, casual dining, etc. Of course, that isn’t always a foolproof plan, depending on the size, shape and scope of the furniture’s intended room

The Proper Table Setting

This isn’t a guide to cutlery, but rather a guide to the literal setting of your table. Where is it going to go in your house? Who will be using it? What for? Why not elsewhere? When will they need it during the day? You know, all those important plot details that make up the story of your everyday life.

Casual family dining: For the young, growing or busy family, you need a space where you can still dine together or grab and go on the run. You need a classic table and chairs that will prove strong, durable and last over time with enthusiastic use. Staple woods for these sorts of tables are maple or acacia. Shoot for a dining set that would look at home in your dining room if you use it every day, or in the kitchen if it is large enough for a dining space. Short on space but not on guests? Consider an expandable dining table with leaves that you can add as needed for entertaining.

Having a breakfast nook changes up your dining situation and gives you a separate space for less formal dining

Formal dining: As long as formal dining rooms are still a thing, there’s nothing quite as gorgeous as a long, dark hardwood banquet table dressed in a proper table setting, a bold centerpiece and delicate candles. Leave the wrought, Victorian scroll backs behind for once; tall-backed chairs bring a bit of an edge. Skip heavy window treatments, too, and let the room breathe. Lighten things up with a neutral wall and window sheers.

Breakfast nook: Have the formal or family table, but want an oasis for sipping coffee on quiet Sunday mornings? Consider a breakfast nook table, even if you don’t have a nook. A small table in the kitchen for a quick bowl of oatmeal and a plate of eggs gets your family together in the morning, even if it’s just for those three minutes before the bus.
