Study Stations

Encourage studious behavior with these functional and fun homework spots.

Get your kids ready for back to school by setting up a study station in your home. A study station is a home office of sorts, designed for your child to have a dedicated space to complete their homework. Of course, you probably don’t have a dedicated room to turn into an office space for your child. No problem! A study station can be location in a corner of their bedroom or a nook in a shared space, such as a den, or it can even be a section of your own home office that’s set aside for your child.

Dedicate a work space for your child to complete their homework and projects.
Choose a simple desk to support your child's tasks without taking up too much space.

Why create a study station?

A study station creates a dedicated space in your home that is set aside just for your child. By creating a space that’s separated from the living spaces of your home, either with an actual wall divider or by design, it helps lessen distractions and sets your child up for better concentration and schoolwork success. It also helps encourage a productive routine, since your child has a set place to go and complete their homework.

What do I need for a study station?

A kid’s study station depends on the age of your child. A young child may just need a youth desk set in a corner of a room, along with containers of pencils, crayons and other school supplies. Older children need a place to set their computer or laptop, as well as enough space to spread out their books and papers.

A simple desk with a slide out keyboard area or drawer for supplies may fit well in a small space while still providing ample room for work. Choose a desk that your child will want to sit down at, like a stylish modern desk with a sleek and simple design. An industrial style desk can bring a fresh focus into your space that you and your child will love; while a writing desk offers simplicity and a smaller size that can fit the nook or corner that you’re converting.

Once you have the perfect office desk, it’s all about supplies. By organizing all the supplies your child will need to complete their homework, from pencils galore to rulers, staplers and more, you can make sure your kid can work from start to finish without the need to get up in search of more notebooks or other materials. Use cute bins and totes to organize the supplies and help the study station stay neat, clutter free and conducive to work.

Choose an adjustable height office chair that will accommodate your growing child.

Of course, you also need an office chair for your child. Teenagers often have more homework, so you should choose an ergonomic desk chair that is comfortable enough for them to sit down in and work for an hour or so each evening. Many office chairs offer adjustable heights, so your rapidly growing youth can adjust the height as needed.

Since your child is already spending much of their day sitting down in class, you may also want to consider a sit-to-stand home workstation. These convenient accessories allow your child to easily adjust their monitor and keyboard to a preferred height. By converting a regular desk to a stand-up desk, your youth can stretch their limbs while still exercising their brain muscles as well.

Inspiration-motivation

Along with all the necessary supplies, it’s important to create a space that your kid enjoys. Some home accessories that suit their tastes can do a lot to inspire your child and encourage their best work. You can hang wall art next to their desk, and fill a shelf or an empty spot on their desk with little nick-knacks, such as a fun paper weight or vase. Just don’t go overboard with the home office accessories, since you want to keep your child’s spot feeling neat and open.

Extras

Is your child’s study station in a shared space? Noise cancelling headphones can help keep your child focused, even with foot traffic around them. Is their space in a dim corner? A desk lamp can keep the area bright and keep your child from getting drowsy. You can choose from many fun designs that will help make the space truly their own. Don’t forget coasters for a glass of lemonade, and your child will be set for an evening of studying.
