Bedroom Refresh

Follow these easy updates to wake up your tired bedroom design.

How would you like to wake up to a remodeled bedroom? Or have a more comfortable retreat at bedtime? Too costly, you say? Too much work? Not necessarily! Here are a few ideas to introduce new function and style to that bedroom, and some can happen in a matter of days!

How can I upgrade my master bedroom?

Your master bedroom doesn’t have to look the same as it did last month and the month before that and six months ago. Make it fresh with some of these changes.

New color. There’s no quicker way to change the mood in your master suite than with a bucket or two of paint. What kind of bedroom do you want: light and airy, or cozy and intimate? If you prefer to keep it bright, stick with white or creamy colors on the walls, but you can jazz it up with some accents such as a forward blue or teal for the baseboard, doors and window trim. Use an unapologetically plain white for the ceiling.

But if a chic, snug space is your cup of tea, then the light-ceiling rule can go out the window. For example, how would your room look with the walls and ceiling the same shade of gray, and some brightening mirrors and bedding to even out the look? Or the ceiling and walls in complementary shades? Or cheerfully contrasting tones for the walls and trim?

Revel in the new colors. Echo your new trim color in pillows, bedding and throws, or bring in yet another color. You don’t need to stick to solids. Experiment with patterning; here are some tips on how. If you’re feeling adventurous, try black as an accent. How about extra pillows and throw blankets that match each other but contrast with the bedspread? Remember that different textures can add as much interest as differing colors, and mix rough with smooth. Use everything from curtains to wall art to bring out the colors you love.

A floor lamp can cast a new light on your bedroom decor.

Another way to refresh your bedroom is to change, or add to, the lighting. If color is the cake, then lighting is the icing. Floor lamps, table lamps and sconces are attractive in and of themselves but also add countless possibilities for bringing colors to life. Also, a well-placed mirror brings a new dimension to a room.

Still feel like your room needs a little help? Treat yourself to something new. An added element can brighten the room and give you a boost each time you walk in. How about an accent chair in a corner? Match the chair to your color scheme, or pick the chair first and match the room to it. If your headboard is boring, swap it out for a stylish new one, such as a cozy and trendy upholstered headboard. Add some plants and greenery, real or faux. Pick some new wall decor. Try something serene for a bedroom, like calming landscapes or abstract shapes.

How do I revamp my room on a budget?

If your bank balance has your spending on a diet, no problem. You don’t need the latest and greatest furniture. A little improvisation goes a long way.

Renew or repurpose furniture. Paint or refinish a chest or dresser. Build an improvised bookcase. Dress up an inexpensive nightstand.

Get creative with the foot of your bed. Make it more than an ordinary footboard. Put a trunk there; either a distressed or a finished one can work. Or add a bench. Bring in a short wide bookcase or a couple of narrower ones. Try a couple small storage units, or some oversize baskets.

A new bench at the foot of your bed is a convenient place to rest or sit and think.

Add and rearrange bedroom decor. Even without additions, moving around what you have can make things fresh. But the best bedroom decor ideas often come from combining something old with something new. Rehang photos and art in a gallery wall display. Get tips here. Toss an extra or a different throw blanket over your bedspread. Select new curtains. Even different tiebacks change an appearance. Create a dresser top display. You can use a tray to group perfume bottles, or add a favorite vase with some seasonal flowers and foliage. Adorn a wall with a tapestry or other wall décor, such as metal wall art. Give yourself a new clock. Swap out your light switch covers or your dresser handles. The possibilities are endless, and in many cases, easy and affordable.

A new headboard can change the look of your entire bed.

How should I organize my bedroom on a budget?

Rearrange and declutter. Moving pieces around is the quickest (and least costly) way to make your bedroom different. The “rules” say the bed should be on the wall opposite the door, but rules are made to be broken. Put it under the window if you like. Or in a corner. Just make sure it’s easy and comfortable to walk through the room. Get more ideas about bed placement.

Employ some stylish containers. This is where a trunk or some baskets by the footboard can make themselves useful by holding a few extra items. Take advantage of your closet. Add shelves, storage units and maybe even that old dresser or bookcase you don’t know what to do with. More storage in your closet equals less clutter in your bedroom.

Create a corner or nook. Set up a reading spot with an accent chair, a lamp and a side table. Keep a special blanket on the chair back for curling up with your favorite author, or for just relaxing with a special drink and admiring the space you’ve created.

There are so many ways to make your bedroom a new favorite room, and they don’t require a wheelbarrow full of cash. Pick a few and get started on your room refresh right away!
