Beginner Guide to Boho Chic

Learn how to get the bohemian look in your home.

Bohemian design seems to be everywhere (especially Pinterest). A practice in maximalism design, the boho look focuses on curated and unique pieces. It’s interesting, eye-catching, and charming. Boho style is perfect for any wanderlust spirit looking to express their individuality. Overall, most boho looks focus on comfort and warmth, which makes any bohemian space the perfect place to relax. Here’s how you can get started turning your place into a cozy bohemian getaway.

Patterns and Textures and Layers, oh my!

By mixing material and texture, you can provide a layered feeling in your furniture.

The bohemian style is often characterized by its use (or overuse, depending on your perspective) of patterns. Mix patterns and colors freely. A good way to start if you’re nervous is to pick one busier pattern that you love, and style around that. Use neutral colors or less busy patterns next to it to draw the eye.

Typical boho colors are warm in tone. Browns, tans, and earth tones help provide the base of a palette while jewel tones like reds, purples, and pinks give you that pop of color. But this isn’t a hard and fast rule if these colors don’t speak to you. Bright turquoise and yellow tend to be common accent colors as well.

Ornate rugs can provide an accent piece or build on your current patterned style.

Play with texture along with pattern and color. Place glass next to metal next to wood next to whatever else you want. This play on texture allows for a layered feel to the space, which is essential to the bohemian look. It also allows you to use different styles of furniture in one space. A modern end table with clean lines might look lovely next to a vintage plush chair.

Like we said before, you can never have enough layers when it comes to the bohemian style. Pile on the ornate and vintage looking rugs, crocheted blankets, and accent pillows. It helps create a plush look and feel to your space. This doesn’t mean clutter your room, however. If you start feeling overwhelmed by the layers or number of things in one room, start taking the non-essentials away. Boho style can be clean and organized as well.

Found Furnishings

When furnishing a bohemian room, throw uniformity out the window. Mixing styles, eras, and types of furniture is encouraged in order to avoid monotony or symmetry. Sets are typically discouraged, and there tends to be an emphasis on vintage finds and accent pieces. Find furniture you love without worrying if their finishes or looks match. If you don’t have the time or energy to spend hunting down sought-after vintage pieces, get the look with distressed furniture or furniture made of reclaimed wood.

A common thread throughout most bohemian homes include lots and lots of seating. This is especially true for seating that is lower to the ground, so look into poufs and ottomans as a way to provide the most comfort for the least amount of space. Rattan is also making a comeback inside boho homes, as it tends to mix well with other textures and has that vintage-comfort feel. A rattan chair, couch, or even lighting can work wonders to tone down a space or act as an accent piece, depending on how you style it. Leather, specifically worn leather, works well in vintage spaces as well. Boho styles favor lighter, caramel leather over the dark pieces as bohemian rooms tend to have an airier style to them. A light brown couch works as a great way to center a space.

The Deal with Decor

When it comes to lighting, the bohemian way is soft and classic. One major trend is string lights. No longer regulated to just Christmas trees or college dorms, twinkly string lights come in all kinds of designs and can be hung in a plethora of ways to add a gentle ambience to your room. Another lighting style you can try is lanterns. Vintage looking lanterns and other bare bulb lighting, either on end tables, hung, or used on walls, also adds a warm glow to a room but are a little more polished than string lights.

As for art, there’s absolutely no right answer. Most bohemian style rooms do focus on use of gallery walls or multiple art styles. It ends up creating a curated feel to a room that’s entirely personalized. Utilize your prints, art, and other wall decorations like clocks and shelves to create a “found treasures” look to your walls.

One thing most boho rooms feature? Plants. Indoor greenery like ivy and succulents are incredibly popular and add a natural focus to your room. Large trees or potted plants are also great space fillers and work well in more simplistic bohemian rooms.

Boho is a mix of classic and comfort. It’s unique to each individual and utterly charming in almost any execution, so don’t worry too much about rules. Find pieces you love and have them work together in carefree, bohemian harmony.
