Carpet Flooring Trends

The hottest carpet looks are trending warm with lots of texture.

There is truly no better and simpler way to bring color into your home than through your carpet. Today’s popular carpets, with their cozy-chic looks and super soft feel, offer something that hard flooring options simply cannot. And, while hardwood floors and other wood-look alternatives aren't going anywhere, carpet is making somewhat of a comeback. In particular, lighter carpet tones such as greige, beige, tans and creams have made their way into the spotlight. Today’s carpet trends include a return to warm color undertones, tonal carpets, and subtle patterns, as well as a focus on texture.

Carpet Types

When looking at today’s most popular carpet options, it helps to first discuss carpet types: cut pile and loop pile carpets.

  1. Cut Pile - Many of today’s most popular carpets fall into the cut pile category. These carpets are made by cutting the fiber loops, resulting in evenly cut ends. Cut pile carpets come in a range of material options, lengths, thicknesses, patterns and colors. Cut pile carpeting often has a softer feel and may contain a twist, which helps it stand up to any sort of matting.
  2. Loop Pile - Carpets with a loop pile are precisely what they sound like. These carpets are made of little “loops” of fibers, which are fastened to the backing of the carpet. The great thing about these types of carpets is their durability and ability to withhold a great amount of foot traffic.

Materials

  1. Nylon, being the most common type of carpeting available, is also very strong and durable making it perfect for high traffic areas in your space. Nylon is known for being able to be easily cleaned and maintained as well as excellent fiber resiliency.
  2. Polyester is very durable and stain resistant, with many cost-effective options available. Its soft underfoot, making it the perfect option for a cozy living space.
  3. SmartStrand (Triexta) is a high-performance carpet fiber from the well-known Mohawk brand. It’s very durable, making it a good choice for busy lifestyles; and its stain resistance and spill and soil protection work well for families with kids and pets.
  4. Wool is a natural fiber option that offers many benefits, including a luxe look and feel. It often comes with a higher price tag, but is a durable option that should last for years with proper care.
Neutral colors including gray and beige are leading the color trends for carpeting.

Tonal carpets with more than one color remain popular choices. Grays continue to be popular, especially when a warmer undertone prevails. Lighter colors in tones such as greige, beige, tans and creams are among the most popular as they play well with nearly any home furnishings and décor, and even add versatility and longevity to your space.

Textures

Bringing texture to any part of a home or office design, textured carpeting delivers subtle style and versatility. Fine, nondescript textures in neutral colors remain among the most popular choices. Another current trend is toward tailored textures, and the color combinations are endless, with many exciting heathered and tweed combinations available.

Patterns

Subtle patterns that add visual appeal to the space without stealing the show have made their way to the top of the popularity list when it comes to contemporary carpet styles. These patterns may include a popular grid pattern that works with the decor in any room or even a chevron pattern that adds visual interest to any space.
