Design Trend: Boho

The Boho chic interior design style is electric and all about layers, textures.

If you spend any time on Instagram or looking at interior design trends, you’re likely familiar with Boho or Boho chic style. Bohemian style pulls its origins from the Romani people, the nomadic people of Eastern Europe, but the word “bohemian” has really morphed from its use last century as a noun to describe nomadic and free-thinking people to an adjective describing the aesthetic that it has inspired. Boho chic plays on rich textural elements that invoke feelings of wanderlust while also feeling homey.

There’s a lot of variety in the Boho style. In fact, Boho style is, in general, a lot. It’s not a friend of minimalism. It can be bright and bold, or filled with earthy and neutral tones on the “chic” end. The Boho style is eclectic, with a focus on layers and textures. While Boho style is actually known for its absence of structure, there are some key features and design elements that are common in this aesthetic. What colors are common to the Boho style?

Like in the style itself, there is a lot of range when it comes to selecting a color palette for a Boho-inspired design. While some Boho color palettes feature bold and colorful hues, our Boho trend board leans towards a monochromatic color palette and neutral tones. An earthy gray, darker pepper gray shade, and a rock garden green-gray shade serve as the main colors. Pops of black accents and greenery bring the whole look together.

A leather sofa with its distressed wooden base and a simple, chic silhouette is a main inspiration of this design. While the leather color is neutral, its full of interesting design details. For instance, a 360-degree wood base is perfect for floating in your space. A matching leather chair completes the seating area, while a gray area rug, featuring a stunning updated-traditional motif, brings in some soft texture and helps ground the design.

Layering on the style

Some of the key components in Boho style are lots of TEXTURES and LAYERS. There's really no hard and fast rules when it comes to mixing patterns and textures—anything goes. An easy trick is to start with a set of accent pillows or a throw blanket with a lot of texture and pattern as your inspiration, and build off of that.

Accent furniture may include mixed media options, often featuring some natural materials that add to the texture and charm of your Boho design. For instance, a coffee table with a live edge design built with solid wood shows off natural wood tones and texture, while hand-wrought iron legs bring further beauty and dimension to the piece. Wood, glass, marble, metals, you’ll find it all in Boho accent furniture and décor.

Another key component to the aesthetic, greenery can be brought in through live plants or high-quality faux plants. A vase adds a pretty accent to your space and a spot for fresh stems, while potted plants are an easy option for adding a fresh update to your space.
