Design Trend: Man Cave

The man cave style is about comfort and the big game on the big screen.

The Man Cave look is all about big, comfortable, sink-yourself-into-it reclining seating, whatever sporting event is on the big screen, and a bar space to tell tall stories. The term "Man Cave" hit the scene in the early 90's, and has gained momentum since then. But don't let the name fool you, ladies! It’s a versatile space that can be enjoyed by anybody in the home, and it’s perfect for entertaining as well!

We’ve put together a Man Cave Trend Board to help define this look and give you design inspiration. Read on to learn more about this pleasing aesthetic that’s all about comfort and get ideas for carving out, furnishing and decorating a Man Cave in your own abode.

Upgrade Your Space with a Man Cave

To create your own Man Cave, the first thing you need is a designated space. While a spare room is ideal, you can also dedicate a section of a shared space, such as a home office or den. The all-about-comfort Man Cave style can also be a good fit for any casual living space in your home, such as the family room or perhaps your entire lower level. Others may choose to turn a heated garage into a laid-back lounge space with masculine furniture and décor.

Color Palette

Next up, it’s time to choose a color palette, which can serve as design inspiration and help your space look coordinated. Man Caves typically feature a basic, neutral color palette. Ours consists of two shades of grey, Worldly Grey SW7043 and Intellectual Grey SW7045, as well as a classic navy, Naval SW6244.

Furniture for your Man Cave

Leather seating is practically synonymous with the term “Man Cave”. If you have the space, a large leather sectional is the perfect choice; and power recline is a must for ultimate relaxation! In our Man Cave trend board, we’ve paired a leather sectional with a sleek silhouette with supreme comfort that comes from the plush pillows. It will look good and feel good to anyone as they sink down and settle in to watch a show. Power from head to toe, this sectional comes with three power recliners and power adjustable headrests. This will allow both the main Man Cave resident and a couple of guests to control the support to their head and neck as they recline back.

For the ultimate man cave, choose a sofa or sectional with ALL the extras, such as a USB port to stay connected to electronics and an extended footrest to give you more space to relax. Plus, you can keep beverages and remotes close at hand thanks to a center console and stainless-steel cup holders.

What other furniture does your Man Cave need? If you don’t have the space for a full home bar, a sofa table is a versatile alternative. The wood sofa table on our trend board features clean lines and an urban style. The large size fits perfectly along the back of a sofa or sectional, and it allows plenty of room for a tasty spread. Plus, you can pull up a stool for extra seating in your space when entertaining guests, while not overfilling your space when sitting solo.

A sofa table with stools can provide makeshift bar space and extra seating for your man cave.

For the times when you need extra space for a large spread, or to place books, a game or the latest hobby supplies, a set of wood occasional tables will provide all the surface space you need to help complete a Man Cave design, and they serve up some streamlined style as well. The over-sized tabletop space of the rectangular coffee table features clean-lined, mid-century design, and it kicks it up a notch with oil-rubbed distressing for added character. Created from hardwood solids and veneers, this table is hand finished and meant to impress, bringing a hint of sophistication to the space.

While this space may be called a “Man Cave”, that doesn’t mean it should be left in the dark. A fashionable table lamp can give enough lighting for reading, entertaining and hobby work. Effortlessly urban, this lamp offers a vibe of industrial influence, with its vintage-like and textured appeal. Finished paper composite in black and white, derives the multi-toned cylindrical base with a light, natural modified drum shade.

How to Decorate Your Man Cave

Like in the rest of your home, décor should be inspired by your interests. Does the main man in your Man Cave love sports? Choose some memorabilia and artwork based on their favorite teams. Are you an outdoorsy bunch? Some landscapes, waterscapes and animal images bring some of nature’s beauty into your Man Cave-inspired space. For the city-men or travel lover, a cityscape or wall art featuring a favorite destination or world map will likely hit the mark.

Greenery can bring in a pop of color and a fresh look that brings some balance to the “cave” like vibe. Opt for an authentic looking faux plant in a nice pot for a low-maintenance, instant design upgrade.

Wall art is an easy way to personalize your man cave design.
