Modern interior design is a style that is defined by its clean lines and a monochromatic color palette, amongst other common elements. Although it is often used interchangeably with contemporary design, modern design refers specifically to the design movement that occurred from the late 19th century through the 20th century. It has roots in the German Bauhaus movement as well as Scandinavian design, and ties in with the modern art movement with its focus on simple form as well as function. Contemporary design, on the other hand, refers to any current design trends and, as such, is continuing to evolve to this day. While there are some common elements between modern design and contemporary design, the latter often features softer lines and lots of earthy elements.

In order to help illustrate the modern design style and offer ideas for how to incorporate it into your home, we’ve put together a Modern Trend Board, featuring living room furniture and décor ideas. Read on to learn more about the color palette, focal points and accent ideas for a modern living room design, as well as how to curate your own modern design.
A balanced and well-though out design often starts with an established color palette. While modern designs typically employ a monochromatic color palette, there is room for experimentation with pops of color. Modern design and art often focus on primary colors. However, a similar impact can be made by bringing in any of your favorite shades, including rich jewel tones. Repose Gray SW7015 and Dorian Gray SW7017 are two earthy grays that provide a color base for our design. The bright pops occur through a vibrant teal color, Still Water SW6223.
Starting with a sofa, we selected furniture that sets the tone for this modern living room design. The curved sofa features two pieces to add movement and style to your room. The whole piece also sits on top of tall tapered walnut legs that feature a brass cap at the end for a touch of elegance. From here, it was time to have some fun with accent pieces and décor!
