Farmhouse Fresh

It’s rustic, simple, shabby-chic, and it’s not going anywhere soon!

We are sure you’re no stranger to farmhouse style. We aren’t either, and have in fact written about it in the past. It’s clear that this isn’t a fast leaving trend, and it has real staying power. That doesn’t mean farmhouse style can’t adapt and change as time moves on, however. Here are some common threads through the multiple adaptations of farmhouse style that are sure to be staples of the design years down the road. No matter how your style changes, you can stay farmhouse fresh.

Farmhouse tables can come in a multitude of sizes and shapes to fit any space.

Farm To Table

One of the best parts of farmhouse style is the focus on family and friends. Farmhouse rooms need to be functional for entertaining and for active families. This is a reason why a great farmhouse dining table is so often coveted by those interested in the farmhouse aesthetic and those just looking to dabble in the style. A farmhouse table can become a gathering area for an entire household and serve as a focal piece for a home. Not only that, but a great, sturdy farmhouse table can be passed down as an heirloom piece for generations.

Farmhouse tables are often large and heavy, and feature wood with beautiful, rough grain. These tables frequently feature trestle bottoms or legs in an x shape. However, the popularity of the trend has caused modifications and adaptations to the large, rectangular table that many think of as traditionally farmhouse. Farmhouse dining tables can fit any space required now with smaller sizes and adjustments to shape, such as round tables. These variations still capture the simple and gorgeous appeal of a huge farmhouse table, but offer alternative styles that may better suit your dining room.

Vintage and distressed pieces fit perfectly into farmhouse style and allow for an easy mix between the old and the new.

Focusing on the Imperfect

Farmhouse home décor really focuses on making the imperfect seem perfect—or at least stylish and unique for your home. With such a heavy emphasis on distressed or vintage pieces, it’s all about finding what you love and embracing the years of use. This also makes the wear and tear of the years to come blend seamlessly. Talk about a perk.

Look for farmhouse furniture and home decor that features the rougher or more real side of material, like reclaimed wood and found pieces (especially if those found pieces reflect the farming nature of the style, like old gears and wheels). Incorporate pieces that look well-loved and that feature raw elements. These can help establish a more lived-in feel to your home, which is a huge element of farmhouse decor.

Natural Element

Bring the outdoors in! Farmhouse style really focuses on blending natural elements with quality pieces so that it feels like a seamless move between outdoor spaces and indoor ones. Bring in greenery as part of your farmhouse decor. A lovely planter or inspired centerpiece on your table can work wonders for creating the farmhouse feel—even if you’re not a plant whisperer. Choose unconventional centerpieces that incorporate elements of nature that aren’t just cut flowers, such as veggies, twigs or succulents. Herbs also play with the core concept of functionality in a farmhouse space, as it adds the outdoor beauty and can be used in your cooking. Grow your own in cute planters! You can also look to hang dried herbs in your space.

Old treasure, favorite trinkets, and unique items can add so much personality to your farmhouse design.

Unique Art

Since farmhouse design is so focused on appreciating the little or common things, the possibilities for decor then become almost endless. Art is not designated just to a canvas in farmhouse style; it can be anything that you find beautiful. Utilize some of those natural elements mentioned earlier in creative displays. Greenery in a pot on the wall or framed with an empty frame can look unique, stylish, and fresh. Raw or faux cotton is well-loved by farmhouse guru Joanna Gaines, seen in her many accessories from the Magnolia Home collection (Gaines’ own line of farmhouse furniture and home accessories here at HOM).

Hang old treasures up! Vintage family photos, cute trinkets or rustic items that you just can’t get rid of make great wall decor or features on shelving. Farmhouse is about what you hold dear, and not what everyone else has. That’s likely one of the reasons why this trend has stayed around and is going to stay around for quite some time.
