Kids’ Bedroom Design Tips

Put big style into small bedrooms with these stylish kids’ room ideas.

Kids bedrooms. The possibilities are endless. The floor space, not so much! Many kid’s bedrooms are small rooms. In fact, a room can be considered a bedroom with as little as 70 to 80 square feet. That’s not a lot of space to work with when you consider everything a child needs in their room, as well as space to play and accomplish their tasks. Even larger bedrooms may seem small as you start moving in furniture; and finding a layout that will accommodate everything you need can be twice as hard when you have siblings sharing a bedroom.

Before you start planning a layout and purchasing new furniture, it helps to take inventory of everything that needs to fit in the room. For furniture, they’ll need a bed as well as a dresser and other storage pieces to fit their considerable collection of clothes and accessories. You’ll also need shelves and other places to store toys, as well as a desk or other workspace for your school age kid. Reading nooks, tents, toy car ramps, art tables – the list goes on and on depending on your child’s age and interests.

While it may seem like an impossible task, the key is to choose kids bedroom furniture and kids bedroom decor that give you a lot of function without taking up a lot of space. These kids’ room ideas will help save your space and sanity, and create a room that your child will love.

No Small Task

A bedroom is a great place to let your child express their creativity by choosing some of their own furniture and décor. By creating a place they love, you can help cultivate their creativity and develop a room that they’ll want to take care of. (Hey, one can hope!) However, this isn’t the only challenge. You want something that they’ll love now, but won’t grow out of as quickly as the jeans and shoes you just purchased for them. At the least, you want something that will be easy to update when their design tastes start to mature. Of course, budget is also a factor. While you may be willing to invest in quality items that will last, you’ll want to make sure they stand up to your child’s rough play and the style is something that is easy to adopt for long-term use.

A bookcase bed provides extra storage and display space.

Things are Looking Up

One simple solution to the lack of floor space is to utilize your vertical space. This can be done in several different ways. Start with the piece that consumes the most space in a typical bedroom: the bed. If you have two children sharing the same room, one of the best solutions is bunk beds. By using bunk beds, you can give each child a separate space to sleep—but only use the floor space required by one bed. Today’s bunk beds are available in a wide range of options, including twin over twin bunk beds, twin over full bunk beds, and full over full bunk beds to name a few. You can also find bunk beds with storage options or even a trundle bed for even more economical use of your floor space.

If you have a single child in a small bedroom, you may still want to consider looking up for beds. A loft bed can make convenient use out of the available space by lifting your child’s bed off the floor and creating a space underneath that’s perfect for storage, a desk or a play area.

Beds aren’t the only way to take advantage of vertical space in a bedroom. Look at your other large pieces of furniture, and consider how the design will fit in your child’s bedroom. By choosing tall but narrow dressers and chests of drawers, you can fit more overall storage space into your child’s bedroom—even if you don’t have room for a large, horizontal dresser. You can also choose tall and narrow bookshelves, and consider wall shelves for even more storage that’s off the ground. You can even mount a couple of wall shelves at either side of the bed in place of nightstands to give your child a place to set a glass of water and book without taking up valuable floor space.

Bunk beds are an ideal solution for small, shared bedrooms.

Hidden Storage

When it comes to kids’ bedrooms, storage is usually the challenge. Even large bedrooms sometimes suffer from child’s piles of clothes and endless supplies of toys, art supplies, homework related items and so much more. We’ve given you some tips for maximizing the storage space in your bedroom by choosing vertical storage furniture. You can create even more storage space in your room by adding drawers and bins that are completely hidden from sight, or rather, hidden in plain sight.

One of the biggest space-saving, game-changing items in kids’ bedrooms and adult bedrooms alike are storage beds. Youth storage beds are available with drawers under one, both sides or the footboard of the bed. These platform beds can give you as much space as a full dresser—all without taking up extra room on your floor. A storage bed is great for tucking away everything from clothes to extra bedding and even toys. There are many options available that can suit your child’s bedroom. A captain’s bed is a storage bed with drawers and storage compartments built underneath it. A bookcase storage bed can provide both concealed and open storage, with its bookcase headboard, storage siderail and footboard. The headboard bookcase is perfect for books, games, toys, display of collections or other items, all within convenient reach! And if you think you can’t get a storage bed because you chose a bunk bed, think again. Some bunk beds even offer drawers under the bottom bunk to truly maximize your useable space.

Another multi-use furniture item is the humble storage ottoman. These pieces are for more than your living room—they can make a great, and useful, accent in your child’s bedroom as well. Along with a place to stash away toys and extra blankets, storage ottomans or benches can create a seat for your child to use while playing, reading or hosting their friends.

By getting the most out of your vertical space and choosing smart storage options, you can get the most out of a small bedroom—even for siblings that share a space. Once you have the bigger pieces figured out, you can add your child’s unique personality through fun bedding, wall art and other décor items that your child will love.

Anchor & protect: two words key to childproofing furniture & TVs

Children like to climb. Children like to climb on furniture. For them, the home is a playground. As you childproof your home you may not be aware that unsecured TVs, furniture and appliances are potential hazards.
