Kid's Room Clutter Tips

Ban the clutter with these easy kid's bedroom organization tips.

Kids’ rooms can be a lot of things. A reflection of their interests and personalities. A place to complete homework and further their interests and hobbies. Of course, it’s also a place that should promote sleep and accommodate the many things they need for their everyday lives, including clothes, school supplies and toys, toys and more toys. It’s no wonder kids’ rooms can get a little cluttered and sometimes turn the corner into downright disasters. Multiply all of these challenges by two for shared sibling rooms, and a clean and functional kid’s room can feel as unreachable as the moon.

However, there are some simple items you can implement to organize your kid’s room, without sacrificing on style. Read on for practical yet fashionable items that will make clean up time less stress.

Functional and Fun

Just because it’s practical, doesn’t mean it has to be boring. When it comes to organizational items, including shelves, bins, cases and cubbies, choosing items your kids love will give them motivation to put them to good use. However, that doesn’t mean you need to go all out in purchasing themed bookcases and other shelving units that your kid will soon outgrow. A neutral bookshelf can be dressed up by lining it with brightly colored cubbies. It helps create a designated space for different types of toys and supplies, and adds to the style statement in your kid’s room as well.

Plenty of storage space will make clean up a breeze.

Love Your Label Maker

Speaking of designated storage spots, make it stick by putting a label on it. Invest in a label maker and put it to work to make clean up time go by without much thought. Everything has a place, and it’s easy to put it away and get on to the next thing.

Coat Hangers, Hooks and Racks

Think coat hanger hooks and coat racks only belong in the entryway? Think again. These pieces can make charming storage items for a kid’s bedroom. Hang dress up clothes on a coat rack for an enchanting display, or fix a hook coat hanger on the wall for all of their favorite accessories. If you have the space, a tree hall with a mirror can offer hooks, a storage bench for accessories and a mirror for all their magical dress up needs.

Amazing Ottomans

Kids need a little seating in their room, whether they are working on a project or hosting friends. However, many small bedrooms don’t have room for more large furnishings. Choose a storage ottoman that can serve as a toy box, or even a place to store extra clothes and accessories, and gain a cozy spot for sitting as well. There are a variety of storage ottomans to choose from, including different sizes and shapes, as well as bright colors that will be right at home in a kid’s space.

Storage Beds

Bins and ottomans are incredibly helpful, but sometimes you need major storage and you just don’t have the space for an extra dresser. In these situations, it’s best to take a look at the pieces you already have. A bed is almost always the largest piece in a bedroom, and not only does it play the most important role of providing your child with a cozy place for slumber, but it can also be a major design statement as well. Get even more out of this already hard-working piece by choosing a storage bed. With drawers underneath the bed on one or both sides and/or the footboard, you gain significant storage space—without taking up any more floor space.

Storage furniture, like storage beds, provide plenty of space for extra bedding, accessories and even toys.

Have a Single Space for Books

For many kids, especially little book lovers, paperbacks and hardcovers make up a big portion of the clutter in their room. By designating a single spot for books, you can make it easier for kids to clean up, and keep the clutter out. Bookshelves and cases options abound. If you are tight on space, choose a tall and thin option to save on floor space. Another choice is a bed with a bookcase headboard, providing built-in space not only for their favorite reads but also for the items they need close at bedtime: a water bottle, favorite framed picture to inspire happy dreams, and an alarm clock to make sure they start their day on time.

Organization Times Two

When it comes to siblings that share a bedroom, choosing paint colors and décor isn’t the only challenge. You also have to create a functional place, with a spot to put all of their favorite items. For many kids’ rooms, bunk beds are the key to fitting a place to sleep for both kids, and leaving enough space for all their other activities, and the items that support them. There are a variety of bunk beds that incorporate storage as well, such as under-bed storage drawers. Another option is a bunk bed with a stairway chest that makes climbing up to the top bunk a breeze with the staircase also providing additional storage.
