Mid-Century Modern Minded

Achieve mid-century modern design by focusing on clean and simple lines, classic shapes.

When it comes to interior design, mid-century modern style has sticking power. Once considered a design-fad brought about by a resurgence in retro themed TV shows—namely, Mad Men—this less-is-more style continues to be popular a decade-plus later, and shows no signs of slowing down. What’s the reason for its popularity? Perhaps, it’s the focus on simple aesthetics, clean lines and classic shapes; all timeless and functional features found in both mid-century modern furniture and mid-century modern decor.

The Furniture

Whether looking at mid-century modern bedroom furniture or living room staples such as mid-century modern sofas, the 1960’s-inspired furniture is all about the silhouettes. Clean lines and low-to-the-ground pieces fit the understated style. (BONUS! They also work well in small spaces.) Look for crisp tailoring and subtle details on your key pieces. For instance, sofas may feature button tufting, key shaped arms that add the timeless appeal, and tapered wooden legs, which are a signature of this style.

For the color palette, stick mostly with neutrals. White walls keep your space clean and allow your furniture and décor to stand out. Neutral colored furniture in tones from greys to browns blend well into the design and complement the clean silhouettes. Looking to spice up your décor with color? 1960’s inspired classics, such as avocado-green, tangerine-orange and mustard-yellow, can add tasty touches to your space. However, mid-century modern décor isn’t limited to retro, food-inspired colors. This versatile style can work with any of your favorite colors, such as rich blues and warm reds and oranges.

Wood, especially teak, is a prominent in mid-century design, adding warmth to otherwise stark rooms. Look for wooden occasional and coffee tables, as well as accent pieces. You’ll also find mixed medium pieces featured wood and glass, or wood with metal touches such as hammered brass accents. And while clean lines remain the theme, many pieces offer interesting shapes to add visual interest to your room.

The Finishing Touches

Complete your mid-century modern space with vintage-inspired accessories and artwork, or use a favorite piece or two to mix retro-chic fashion with your current design. While most mid-century modern style is stuck in neutral, décor can be bold and bright. Geometric shapes, such as globes, are found in lamps; and graphic patterns can be found in colorful wall art.
