The holiday season is just around the corner, and for many of us, that means welcoming friends and family into our homes for festive gatherings and delicious meals. If you've been considering a dining room furniture upgrade, now is the perfect time to take the leap. There are many in-stock dining sets as well as some special order options that can be delivered and set up before the holiday hosting season kicks into full gear.
If you want to be able to accommodate extra dinner guests during the holidays or anytime, an extendable dining table, such as a table with leaves, is an excellent choice. Here is why they are a holiday season (and year round!) must-have:
Space Efficient: In smaller dining rooms, having an extension table can be a game-changer for transitions from day-to-day use to hosting. It is not practical to have a large one-sized dining table for the occasional large group gatherings. Having an extendable table offers space utilization capabilities without sacrificing style or comfort.
Versatile: There are many different style options available, from more traditional looks to contemporary designs. You can also choose from different leaf options.
Easy Storage: When not in use, leaves can be conveniently stored away. This ensures that your dining room remains clutter-free and ready for hosting at a moment's notice.
There are three main types of extension tables: traditional extension tables, butterfly leaf tables and drop leaf tables. First, traditional extension tables can be pulled apart and additional leaves are placed in the center. To open up the table, both ends need to be pulled apart. This step usually requires two people. While some tables have a feature of leaf storage underneath the table, most tables will need the additional leaves stored somewhere else, like in a closet or underneath a bed.
Next, butterfly leaf tables have a folding leaf in the center of the table that folds out like a butterfly. Transforming this table is simple and easy. The butterfly leaf is attached to the overall table so no additional storage space is needed. All you need to do is slide the tabletop apart and then open up and secure the butterfly leaf in the middle.
Last, but not least, is the drop leaf table. Hinged leaves are attached to both sides of the table and can be simply raised up or down depending on the number of spaces needed at the table. A variation of the drop leaf table is a gate leg table. When the hinged leaves are raised, the gate leg table has an additional leg that can be swung out to support the hinged leaf. This type of table can be valuable in a small or tight dining space.
When planning for extra guests, make sure you have sufficient seating. Benches are a versatile option that can fit extra guests as needed. Stools and chairs can be pulled in from other rooms, or extra dining chairs or folding chairs can be taken out of storage before guests arrive.
Once the puzzle of fitting all your guests comfortably is solved, the focus turns to “Where are all the food and beverages going to fit?” Consider adding a buffet or sideboard to your dining room. This not only enhances the aesthetics of the space but also provides extra serving and storage space during holiday gatherings. You can use it to display dishes, store tableware, and keep food, beverages, and desserts easily accessible to your guests. The buffets and sideboards come in many different shapes and sizes depending on the space and layout of your dining room and home. Bonus: these storage and display pieces also give you a place to set extra holiday decor to make your holiday meals even more festive. Consider seasonal bouquets, candles and other tabletop items.
As you prepare to host friends and family during the holiday season, consider upgrading your dining room furniture. It can make a world of difference for your hosting capabilities, and contribute to many joyful memories of being gathered together around the dining room table!
