2020 Interior Design Trends

What’s hot and what’s not in interior design trends for the new year.

Out with the old, and in with the new! It’s time for a new year, New Year’s resolutions, new goals and replacing your outdated home décor with some new styles. Learn about what’s trending in 2020 in interior design, including furniture styles and home accessories, and how you can incorporate your favorite trends into your home. We’ll also tell you what trends didn’t make the cut, and will be left behind in this new decade.

What colors are in for 2020?

When you think of interior design trends, colors may be one of the first things to come to mind. In fact, colors come in and out of style perhaps more than any furniture style or home development. Just think of the avocado greens and dusty pinks of the past eras.

Today, there are several authorities leading the way in color trend predictions. One of the biggest, Pantone, recently named “insert color here” their 2020 Color of the Year. Today, there are several authorities leading the way in color trend predictions. One of the biggest, Pantone, recently named “Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue” its 2020 Color of the Year. “We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. Classic Blue is an easy color to add to home interiors, suiting traditional and elegant spaces, and also adding a bold pop of color to casual and even contemporary style homes.

Of course, Pantone’s not the only big name in colors. Behr, an industry-leading paint company, named “Back To Nature” S340-4 its 2020 Color of the Year. The light yellow-green color is an “organic shade of green meant to purify and promote balance in the home”.

As far as neutrals go, grey has been the biggest player in the game for some years. While you’ll still be seeing grey walls, furniture and more, 2020 looks to be leaning towards warmer neutral tones. Bone and other softer tints of white will be lightening up homes everywhere in 2020.

Interior design trends and new furniture designs aren’t thought up in a vacuum. They are a reflection of what’s happening in the world today—of today’s fashions, today’s needs and even the latest technology. On the other end, some of the design trends are a response to a void that’s found in today’s touch-screen, smart world, helping to connect and inspire people through natural and grounded design.

Multi-Functional Furniture

The movement towards furniture that plays multiple roles comes in part from the greater move towards minimalism. Whether spurred by the economy or a simple desire to downsize, tiny houses and sleekly designed condos aren’t going away in 2020. With this smaller floor space comes the need for cleverly designed furniture. Think beds with storage drawers underneath, desks with built in shelving units, and the clever catch-alls: storage ottomans. These clever pieces can play the role of coffee table, footrest and even bench, all while keeping extra linens and other items keenly out of sight.

Even if you aren’t tight on space, multi-functional furniture helps minimize clutter, helping home owners achieve clean and modern designs.

Smart Furniture and Mattresses

Your phone is smart. Your TV is smart. Your devices control everything from your lights to home security. It’s no surprise that furniture is offering new technologies and showcasing new advancements, designed to make your plugged-in life easier and to give you the best in personalized comfort.

Start with convenience. You can find a wide selection of power motion recliners that offer advanced support and easy operation, as well as connectivity. Think integrated USB chargers to start. You’ll even find advanced zero-gravity massage chairs with integrated audio speakers and built-in LED lights to name just a couple of features.

The advancements continue into the bedroom. Nightstands and even lamps also feature built-in USB ports, and mattresses themselves are smarter than ever. Responsive layers and advanced comfort features are just the start. Smart mattresses can automatically and continuously adjust to your desired firmness as you move around throughout the night, and the mattress can actually send data about your sleep to an app, a system designed to help you identify issues and improve your sleep quality.

Smart technology means mattress innovations and better sleep in the new year.

Integrated Work Spaces

For better or worse, the line between work time and home life has been blurred. It’s a fact of today’s modern life, that many people don’t completely log-off, even as they complete their 9-5 in the office. Further, many companies and workers alike are moving towards shared office spaces, flex hours and even work-from-home jobs.

How has this trend affected home design? A home office space has become critical components to many people’s home lives. While some homes will continue to have a separate room dedicated as a home office, you’ll also see integrated office spaces that allow employees and side-hustlers alike to complete work in their home as wanted and needed. For instance, a desk set to the side of a living space serves as an ideal spot for a laptop; and an accent chair with a power chairside table and table lamp can be a work spot for catching up on email on a tablet while still being involved with family activities.

Sustainable Furniture and Going Green

Perhaps in part as a balance to the smart devices and integrated workspaces in our lives, there is a new focus on sustainability, as well as incorporating natural, simple elements into our homes. Starting from the ground up, there are many sustainable flooring options, including wood floors (some are better than others), bamboo and cork options, and even linoleum flooring. We’ll continue to see an emphasis on reclaimed wood furniture, which is both eco-friendly and one-of-a-kind, making it popular with millennials and others that want truly unique and sustainable options.

Whether it’s through colors or actual plants, we’ll continue to see greenery in home interiors. It’s easy to add splashes of green through home accessories like throw pillows and wall art, and faux and real plants and indoor trees can add vitality and freshness to any tired style.

Both beautiful and organic, solid and reclaimed wood bedroom furniture exudes rustic and natural style in 2020.

In 2020 and years to come, you can find a little bit of almost any design style you love, as well as some fresh takes on tried-and-true styles. Think minimalism partnered with personalized touches, county paired with modern updates, and a modern island retreat in place of classic coastal designs. You’ll also find plenty of patterns and textures, adding interest to today’s home interiors.

Geometric Patterns

Gaining popularity over the past couple of years, geometric prints will continue to be big and bold in 2020. If you are hesitant about adding these commanding prints into your home, think small with accessories. You can update your neutral sofa with a set of bold, geometric print pillows. Looking to make a bigger impact? A geometric print rug can make a big statement in your room without being overwhelming. An accent chair is also a great way to incorporate a geometric print focal point, making a particularly nice addition to modern and even casual style homes. Go bolder with bright colors or subtler by selecting muted colors and neutrals for your geometric prints.

Touchable Textures

Today’s hottest textures are soft, luxurious and oh-so-touchable. Velvet has been gaining steam in interior design, and that will continue into the new decade. Soft velvet sofas, chairs and accent pillows pair well with leathers and other textures, bringing versatility and softness into your design. Like velvet, faux fur adds a touchable texture to your space, and it’s also versatile. Faux fur suits glamorous looks, and it can fit right in with casual designs as well.

Touchable and luxurious textures like velvet are set to reign in 2020.

Brass is Back

While 2019 was arguably most about black metallics, brass will reign in 2020. Wall art is an easy way to get in on the trend, with a wide range of choices available from wall clocks to other pieces. You can also add brass accents to your living spaces through accent pieces and accessories, such as accent tables with brass legs and/or hardware, and floor and table lamps with antique brass bases. Even sofas and chairs are getting in on the game, with brass metal legs pairing well with a range of upholstery, including leather, and sophisticated silhouettes. These brass pieces have timeless appeal, and can add subtle warmth to your space.

A sophisticated sofa and chair with blackened brass metal legs are on trend for 2020.

There are many trends that have mainstays in home design for the past several years. For instance, grey colors are found everywhere in today’s homes, from floors to ceilings, as well as furniture and home accessories. As mentioned previously, grey may have seen its peak with the trend moving towards warmer neutrals. However, that doesn’t mean it will be going completely away anytime in the near future. You’ll continue to see some grey walls, furniture and skies in 2020 and beyond.

Is farmhouse style out for 2020?

Similarly, the farmhouse style that has seen its signature shiplap walls, rustic home accessories and large farmhouse tables showcased everywhere from the TV screen to your trendy neighbor’s new home may be on a downward path of popularity. However, that doesn’t mean that you’ll see any shortage of farmhouse style pendant lights hanging in home kitchens, stores and office spaces alike. Instead, you may see a gradual move away from the rustic style, and a swing of the pendulum towards a more luxurious, finished look, as modeled by the velvet trend.

Of course, trends are not meant to be followed to a tee. Look to these 2020 interior design trends for inspiration. Simply focus in on what you like and skip what you don’t. And if you love grey, or avocado green for that matter, go ahead and choose the paint color and order those curtains. There’s room for everyone’s personal style preferences in 2020.
