Boho Chic

Bring your free spirit into your home style with these artistic looks.

As the most Instagrammed design style of 2021 with over nine million tagged posts , boho chic is hard to miss when it comes to home design (or really any design). The style pops up on feeds everywhere, spreading images of flowing fabrics, natural elements and unique design.

Bohemian style pulls its origins from the Romani people, the nomadic people of Eastern Europe, but the word “bohemian” has really morphed from its use last century as a noun to describe nomadic and free-thinking people to an adjective describing the aesthetic that it has inspired. Boho chic plays on rich textural elements that invoke feelings of wanderlust while also feeling homey.

Bohemian style is not a friend of minimalism. It's a plethora of different textures, patterns, colors and styles that all live in eclectic harmony. Boho living rooms often feature gallery walls, overstuffed couches piled high with pillows and layered rugs. The style is focused on the interests of the individual, all brought together to create a comforting oasis.

Boho chic is a more curated version of bohemian style. It uses more neutral colors that coordinate with one another. Neutral doesn’t mean boring, however. Boho chic is bohemian’s more glamorous cousin, and tends to utilize more glitz and bling than traditional boho styles.

Interested in adding boho chic decor into your spaces? Here are some simple tips to make your home a little more boho.

Mix and match patterns by using similar colors in a room.

Pattern Clash? Never Heard of Her

This is your time to throw out the design rules about pattern clash. Mix and match patterns that you love and colors that bring you joy, without worrying about if they “go.” Florals mixed and paisleys mixed with strong geometrics often are featured in bohemian decor, as they tend to play well together by balancing one another out.

To keep things boho chic, neutrals and earthy colors are a great asset. Browns, greens and tans provide a wonderful base that you can either keep neutral, or add pops of your favorite colors to. It helps keep the room coordinated so that the room feels harmonious and peaceful. Mixing patterns in color coordinated ways also helps steer clear of too busy of a room and helps you find the “chic” in boho chic.

The Natural Look

Overall, natural and rustic finishes are a go-to when it comes to this style. Nothing screams “boho chic!” more than an unfinished rattan chair or live edge coffee table. Reach to natural fabrics like hemp, cotton or linen when creating a boho-inspired room, as well as natural and exposed woods. However, there isn’t a particular color or tone that is typical of boho chic, so whether you gravitate towards rich, dark grains or light, creamy woods, your love of rustic finishes can shine through. The real key here is mixing those textures and finishes by layering them. Layering a variety of textural elements creates the visual depth that bohemian chic decor thrives in, and can really be the selling point of the style.

Don’t forget that boho chic does love the sparkle and shine a bit more than bohemian. Leaning towards more metallic finishes with a lovely shine on them can help add that touch of glam that screams boho chic to your room.

Keep it Cozy

Comfort is king when it comes to boho chic design. The style is based on nomadic and wandering lifestyles that want to create wonderful and homey environments. To bring boho to your home, fill it with soft and plush items like faux fur blankets, fun poufs, and lots and lots of rugs. Boho chic bedrooms are very trendy right now, largely because it helps make a space more peaceful and comforting. Who doesn’t want to sleep on a bed overflowing with fluffy pillows and cozy blankets? Layering your plush rugs, throws, pillows and more can create a versatile yet reassuring space (and those of us from the Midwest can attest to how much layering can keep you comfortable at all times of the year).

Treasure Hunters Welcome

Since the style is largely based around world travellers, boho chic decor often features eclectic mixes of found pieces. It’s time to display your collections or souvenirs from past trips! Boho style is great for putting things that mean something to you, that you love and want to show to your friends and family, front and center in your home. Bohemian style is about showing off what makes you who you are. Find art that speaks to you, trinkets that make you laugh, and textural items that excite you.

Like many designs, boho chic is about balance. However, it requires a lot less editing than other styles. It is a maximalist type of balance, one that thrives on there never being too much of one thing. Mix cool vintage finds with strong natural woods and fun patterns to create a room that’s as diverse and eclectic as it is cozy and domestic. With intentional styling, a touch of glam, and a commitment to the eccentric, you’re sure to stumble into a boho chic style room that’s worthy of settling down in (until your next adventure).
