Cozy Fall Design Trends

These are the easiest ways to add warmth and comfort into your home this fall.

There’s so much to love about fall, and much of it is based on the outdoors. Hikes for peak fall colors. Crisp walks. Long coffee dates over maple lattes. While many of us are enjoying the last of the outdoor living season, there’s no reason that we have to step away from the fall things we love the most when we walk indoors. It’s easy to bring fall colors, scents and feels inside our home. By focusing on a few design elements, you can curate a cozy indoor living space and bring a snug autumnal feel to your bedroom as well.

Warm Colors

When we think of fall, one of the first things that comes to mind is the beautiful colors: reds, oranges and yellows. Famously found in fall leafs as well as fall plants and flowers this time of year, it’s easy to introduce some of the same hues into your home. Consider introducing new artwork that showcases beautiful fall foliage or adding other warm-hued accessories in your living space and bedrooms. You can also bring some actual colors from the fall inside by placing brightly colored leaves in a clear jar or choosing your favorite stems to add a fresh bouquet inside your home.

Texture. Texture. Texture!

Are red and orange just not your colors? You can create a similar feeling of warmth and comfort in your home, simply by adding thick fabrics and layered textures that are ideal for fall and winter. Even neutral ones will do the trick. Think thick, cream knits; soft shag rugs; and even smooth, velvety upholstery.

Rugs can add a cozy texture to your room that's perfect for the cooler months.

Layers of Comfort

When the days start getting crisp, we pull our layers out of the back of our wardrobes—chunky knit sweaters, well-worn cardigans and denim jackets take over the prime spot in our closets. The same strategy can be applied to giving our homes a comfy seasonal update. Focus on draping different fabrics on your soft surfaces, such as your bed and sofa. You can also add texture to empty surfaces, such as accent tables and shelves, through the addition of plants and three-dimensional sculptural pieces.

Follow these tips for adding color, texture and layers throughout your house.

Pair thick textures with fall themed art for a cozy, seasonal field.

Living Room: In the living room, it’s all about small changes to visually update the room. Consider these easy swaps to increase the warm colors and textures in your room.

  • Replace summer floral and lake-inspired artwork with fall landscapes.
  • Switch out summery throw pillows with pillows featuring fall patterns and colors.
  • Drape cozy throw blankets on your sofa and accent chair to keep guests snug.
  • Roll up a summery rug and replace it with a heavily textured rug for autumn.

Dining Room: Get ready for fall by focusing on your centerpiece and accents.

  • Create a simple centerpiece with a new vase and fall flowers, such as chrysanthemums, daisies or sunflowers.
  • Add some of your favorite scents by placing new candles on a hutch or countertop. Pumpkin and apple are a couple of fall favorites.
  • Place a tray of real or decorative pumpkins or gourds on an empty surface.
Fall candles make a simple seasonal centerpiece for your dining room table or a counter display.

Bedroom: To update your bedroom for fall, focus the majority of your attention on the bed. Bedding can be refreshed by simply adding new layers to the mix.

  • Add new throw pillows, replacing summer floral pillows with textured pillows and warm colors.
  • Switch out sheets and comforters for warmer options, such as flannel sheets and a thick duvet.
  • Add a thick and textured throw at the end of your bed for extra heat.
  • Swap artwork hung above your bed to complement the colors of your new fall bedding.
Swap out your everyday paintings with seasonal artwork for an easy and effective update.

Other Rooms: There are plenty of spaces in your home that can use a little touch of fall love. From a foyer table in your entry way to your mantle in your family room. Grab a few of your favorite harvest-themed decorations or pick up a new piece or two that make you smile.

  • Hide a fall gnome in a little nook of your home to bring some seasonal charm to all who see it.
  • Hang a fall-themed wreath in your entryway or above your fireplace.
  • Metallic pieces such as gold and mixed metal wall art can add texture to your home.
These seasonal gnomes add a little charm to your home for the fall.

By incorporating your favorite fall scents and scenes inside your home, you can get the most enjoyment out of the season. Grab a breakfast of apple donuts and get started on these easy, breezy fall home updates!
