Design Trend: Textured Neutral

What is the Textured Neutral Design? It's calming, clean and HOT this spring.

Some of today’s hottest trends feature monochromatic color palettes with interest brought in through the use of texture, texture, texture! From farmhouse to Scandi styles, the use of light colors and soft textures are common to many of the most popular looks you see all over design magazines, social media posts, as well as your stylish neighbor’s home! Another design style that encompasses both of these elements is the Textured Neutral aesthetic. Textured Neutral design style is all about calming monochromatic color tones and lots of touchable texture to give it variety. This style has classic appeal, but the furniture and décor is styled with modern updates to make the whole room feel current.

We’ve put together a Textured Neutral design trend board to give you inspiration. Read on to learn more about this pleasing aesthetic and find out how to make the look work in your own home.

The Color Palette

It may be obvious, but a Textured Neutral design should be based on, well, neutral shades. Our trend board includes a fresh white color, a bold gray-black color, and an accessible beige mid-tone. You’ll also see wood tones, from warm to gray-washed wood furniture. And don’t think this look is dull! The pops of color are few but fresh. You’ll see them come in through greenery—both in the wall art of leaf prints and the potted plants that bring a fresh feel to the room.

The Seating

This textured neutral design centers around the largest and most used piece in most of our living spaces: the sofa, of course! In place of a regular sofa, a light-colored sleeper sectional allows plenty of room for guests to spread out, and the neutral color will go with the rest of your furnishings and accessories. With a simple and clean silhouette, wooden legs and curves in all the right places, this sofa is basic but it isn’t boring. Plus, a slight weave of the fabric brings some understated sophistication to the piece.

A matching chair in gray upholstery adds to the conversation grouping in this design, and it’s perfect for today’s casual lifestyles. Finally, no living space is complete without an area rug! This one stays in the neutral color palette but adds a dynamic graphic print that makes a striking addition to this space.

The Accents

While a lot of the bigger pieces lean heavy to the neutral style, the accents lean heavy on texture. The texture of the white oak wood and veneers coffee table is the perfect contrast to the clean lines of the sectional. The texture and weave of the accent pillows give it just enough interest without being overdone. Details like subtle patterns and fringe bring character to your room, while a chunky knit throw is a useful, soft and stylish.

Additional home accessories can be positioned on the coffee table and other accent furniture. For instance, decorative wooden trays and a glass votive candle holder with a wood base are appealing additions to the space, and a set of table lamps are crucial for adding soft accent lighting that hits at just the right spots.

Finally, the pops of greenery in the botanical wall art play off of the neutral monochromatic color palette beautifully, and the potted plants help bring a finished, designer-approved look to the room. Designer tip: look for high-quality faux plants for comparable style without the maintenance.

How to create your own textured neutral design style.

This Textured Neutral design is easy to recreate in your own home. Start with a neutral toned base for your main seating piece. Add texture by adding fun accent pillows, a woven neutral textured rug, distressed wood accents, or even wicker baskets. Lastly, add pops of black and greenery to finish off this look.
