How to Choose a Kid's Bed

Select the ideal bed for your kids, from twin beds with storage to bunk beds.

Your baby can’t possibly be ready for a big kid bed already, right?! Well, maybe they are and that’s ok because while it might be hard to say goodbye to a well loved crib there are so many exciting options for your growing kid! And, once your kid is used to sleeping in their new bed, you’ll have a much easier time visiting new places with them without the need to bring a portable crib along. It’s one of the many bittersweet milestones every parent has to face, but you’ll find yourself a lot more excited after seeing the plethora of options available to you and your little one.

Space

Space. It’s the final….. No, no, that’s not right. Space. It’s the ultimate determinator for furniture options. Yes, yes, that’s it. First things first. Look at the space you have in your child’s room. As your child grows, what will you want to include in their bedroom, and how will it all fit? Is there space for a twin bed, dresser, and desk? Is there space for more- like a nightstand or a beanbag chair? Or what if there’s not enough space for even the basics- then what? We’ve got all the solutions to your questions!

Small Abodes

Many kids’ bedrooms are limited on valuable space making it hard to imagine where they’re going to fit all their stuff as they grow. While it might be easy to fit a twin bed and a basic dresser in their bedroom now, it might be harder to fit another sibling, a friend for a sleepover, or a desk for increasing schoolwork as they get older.

The bed features two drawers in the storage siderail and two drawers in the storage footboard.

Consider options for tight spaces:

  • Twin bed with storage Don’t leave that space under the bed to become a pit of despair for all lost things - outfit it with storage! By enclosing the under the bed space with built-in storage drawers, you’ll easily be able to pull open the drawers to reach all your child’s precious treasures. It’s a great way to hide away extra stuff without a lot of effort.

  • Kid’s loft bed Loft beds aren’t only for dorm rooms anymore! But the idea behind them remains the same - putting the bed up high not only makes your little one overjoyed but also makes lots of room underneath for play, seating options, desks, and more.

  • Twin bunk bed If you plan to house two kids in one room or host lots of sleepovers with family and friends, bunk beds are the way to go. Having an extra bed readily available will make hosting a breeze and your child will feel so special having a roomie for a night!

  • Trundle bed If you prefer to keep your child closer to the ground than a bunk or loft bed affords, a trundle bed might be the perfect option for hosting overnight guests. Plus, a trundle bed stores smoothly under most standard beds making it a great option to expand your overnight hosting capabilities.

Small spaces don’t mean limited options with so many great beds and great combinations to choose from! Just be sure to select a high quality product made of sturdy, solid wood or durable metal so your child’s bed lasts through childhood and beyond.

Bigger options for Bigger spaces

If you’re lucky enough to have a spacious kids room, consider going bigger from the start with a full bed. They don’t stay small forever and having a bit of extra room when they’re grown might mean the difference between keeping the bed or needing to upgrade later on. Full beds come with their own set of options, including:

  • Twin/Full bunk beds A full bed on the bottom with a twin bunk overhead leaves lots of options for a growing family or for hosting guests overnight.

  • Full Bed with storage The need for storage won’t change as your child grows. If anything, they’ll want even more space to store away items they consider private. Including storage under the bed means keeping the bedroom open and airy, as opposed to adding another storage unit to take up space.

  • Trundle bed Trundles aren’t limited to twin beds, but only get bigger with trundles outfitted for full beds.

A loft bed can be a fun option for multiple beds or to free up floor space for other uses.

Additional Options

When looking for a new bed, don’t limit yourself to the traditional style. Beds come with a plethora of options now. Bunk beds come with attached ladders or full staircases with built in storage (talk about handy). Loft beds come with built-in dressers or desks to keep the number of pieces of furniture you need to acquire to a minimum. All options are available in a number of styles to fit your lifestyle and budget.

Get excited about this new phase of life for you and your child by upgrading them to a bed that will stay with them for years to come.
