The Bed

The most important thing to consider when buying a loft bed for your child’s room is the bed itself. After all, we spend much of our time in bed, and you want to make sure it will fit your child’s needs, as well as any restrictions of the room itself. Loft beds are available in twin and full size, allowing you to select your size preference according to the space in your kid’s room and their need to stretch out.

Also critical, make sure to choose a loft bed with sturdy construction that’s built to last. Many solid wood loft beds are available, or you can select a very sturdy metal loft bed, such as one made from tubular steel. Finally, you’ll want to make sure your child can easily and safely get up and down from the bed. Some loft bed designs feature end panels, which can easily be used as a ladder. Other designs feature an attached ladder, or a ladder you can purchase separately.

The Mattress

Like bunk beds, loft beds feature a slat system that eliminates the need for a box spring. Whether you choose an innerspring or memory foam mattress, choose one that will be comfortable for your child, provide the support their growing bodies need and last for years to come.

The Hideaway Underneath

The loft bed is great for creating more floor space in your child’s bedroom. Some designs are open under the bed, allowing you to create a space that fits your youngster’s unique needs, interests and hobbies. For the bookworm, add a rug underneath the bed, a few mismatched comfy pillows, a bean bag chair and a lamp for a casual and cozy reading nook. For school age children, you can create a workspace with a desk, school supplies and even a computer, where they can do homework and work on other projects.

Loft beds leave room for creative spaces underneath.

If the room is small, you can take advantage of the floor space under the loft bed for storage. Toy shelves, storage units and bins can help keep a young child’s room organized, or you can add bookshelves or even a dresser to store kid’s clothes, linens and more. Looking to create a more fun than functional space? Drape a curtain across the bottom of the bed to create a secret hideaway for your imaginative child. You can design a castle underneath for your little princess, a camp for your outdoorsy child, or any other themed space you know your child will love. The possibilities are endless!

To simplify your design, you can also purchase a loft bed with desk, with some models tucking away a built-in study and storage compartment neatly beneath the sleeping area. A lower desk can accommodate a computer with a pull-out keyboard tray, plus a suspended storage compartment for studying, gaming or more.
