Nursery Trends

These cute boys and girls nursery furniture styles are about to “pop”.

A new baby comes with many changes, often including a newly designed nursery—complete with the perfect nursery furniture set and nursery furniture accessories. While sky blue and bubblegum pink once reigned as top choices for baby’s quarters, recent trends focus on more sophisticated, neutral palettes and home décor. In the same vein, nursery furniture is often selected to withstand the test of time. For instance, quality, yet affordable nursery furniture sets may include a convertible crib and a dresser that can accommodate a removable changing pad. These items are perfect for baby, and easy to modify for your growing child.

Choose a convertible crib that will last through the toddler years and beyond.

One of the biggest nursery trends focus on one thing: keeping things simple. Choose a wall color that your baby won’t outgrow, such as white or grey. You can add your pops of color through wall art, toys and other items that can be easily and affordably switched out as your child hits the toddler years and beyond. Additional trends include a focus on nature, metallics and more.

A Natural Nesting Place

Nature is making its way into nurseries in a big way. Green works well for gender-neutral nurseries, and provides a natural, organic feel. While green walls are an obvious choice, you can also introduce green through a soft rug, wall art or other décor items. Look for live greenery as well. Houseplants are a great way to add a fresh feel to your nursery. On the subtler side, natural textures are working their way into nurseries through soft cotton linens, canvas wall art, leather accessories and jute rugs.

Another nursery trend inspired by mother nature is large florals. Whether you use wallpaper, wall decals or wall art, large florals add a soft and fresh touch to the space. Large prints of trees, leaves and cacti are also big in nurseries and youth bedrooms alike.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

While many nurseries are forgoing themes entirely, destinations continue to be a popular trend for nursery décor. There is virtually no limit to these themes, from a deep-sea focus with fish, turtles and other ocean décor; to a woodsy theme featuring trees and your favorite outdoor critters. You can even go out of this world with a space themed nursery for your little explorer-to-be.

Metallics

While the focus is on neutrals and natural colors, there is always some room for a little glam. Give your baby’s room some sparkle with your favorite metallics. Choose key nursery décor pieces, such as a floor lamp, in a bronze or rose gold for a retro feel. Or choose silver or gold accessories and wall art to fit a wide variety of styles. While these metallics carry a classic tone, they can also feel fresh and modern.

Not Just for the Baby

Your new little bundle of joy won’t be the only one spending time in the nursery. Since you are bound to spend time in the nursery playing with your little one and rocking her to sleep, make it a room that you’ll enjoy too. Gone are the days of overly juvenile designs that will quickly be outgrown. Instead, parents are opting for more sophisticated neutrals and themes that will last their baby at least through the toddler years, and be enjoyable for others. Choose calming colors and décor, with a focus on comfort! Don’t forget a comfy chair or glider, and a floor or desk lamp for late night feedings.

Like all home trends, there are no set rules for nursery home design. Choose colors and patterns that fit your style and your home, and you’ll enjoy spending time in your nursery…even during the inevitable late-night hours.
