Gender Neutral Nursery

Break beyond the yellow cliche in designing your baby’s gender neutral nursery

Gender neutral names have seen a rise in popularity and with it, gender neutral nursery. Gone are the days of bubble gum pink for girls and baby blue for boys. That being said, some shy away from the idea, cursed with nightmares of bright yellows or dinosaur greens. But the gender neutral nurseries of today are far more trendy than you think. And the benefits of gender neutral nurseries are easy to see.

Neutral nurseries work into the toddler years and beyond. By keeping the basics neutral, you can just add in new accessories to update the room to meet your growing child’s evolving interest.

Neutral nurseries also work great if you plan on having more kids down the road. You can more easily move your older child to a new room and have the nursery ready for a younger sibling, or set the room up to share if you are expecting a new bundle of joy.

We’ve come up with some easy ways to get the ball rolling on the neutral nursery of your (and your baby’s) dream.

Think Themes

Wood makes a lovely neutral that works with a range of aesthetics.

Start with a theme! Some of the best nurseries tell a story or feel like a cohesive picture. This also makes it easy to find pieces and decor. Modern-looking animals are trendy and whimsical, while bold geometric graphics add a funky flair that’s modern without being uncomfortable. Play with what makes you happy, and what would be pleasing to a little one.

Gender Neutral Neutrals

Utilize neutral colors. White and grey cribs are becoming increasingly easy to find and popular. They fit well into plenty of styles, like farmhouse and Scandinavian, and can be used even if the style of your nursery changes. Natural materials like woods make great neutrals while still providing interest to a room. It also creates a cozier atmosphere that may be lacking in a grey or white nursery. As a whole, soft neutral tones can help you create a great groundwork to build off of over time. That way, you can personalize the room to your child’s personality and favorites.

Roll with the Color Wheel

That being said, don’t be afraid of pops of color! There’s a whole spectrum of gender neutral colors that aren’t cliche or overdone. A big trend right now is using oranges to help provide interest to rooms. Tones of orange bring warmth and fun in a way that pinks and blues just don’t. And don’t forget, you can still use these classic nursery colors in non-stereotypical ways. Soft blues and rich salmons can still be neutral and provide the ambience you’re looking to set, no matter the gender of your baby.

Gallery Wall Wonder

Instead of looking for the perfect art piece that will work, find lots of little ones. Set up a gallery wall that matches with your theme to add eclectic interest. It also allows you to swap out pieces and save your favorites.

Function and Form

A gallery wall can give you the design you're looking for with flexibility to change as your child's interests change.

When purchasing furniture for your neutral nursery, remember that function should come with form. You and your baby will be spending a lot of time in this room, so not only should it look good, but be useful as well. For seating, you don’t always have to go with a classic rocking chair (although frankly, who can resist?). Look for large, plush seating that you don’t mind lounging in, or at least something that you find particularly comfortable. Make sure your flooring is fit for crawling and sitting as well. Soft rugs make ideal playtime areas and can also help you establish your theme.

Gift Guru

Make sure to reign in your gifts so that you don’t have a bunch of items you won’t end up using. Let your friends and family know your intentions for a gender neutral nursery, and if you’re planning to, gender neutral clothing and toys. Establish a baby registry as a gentle hint towards items you need and will utilize daily.
