Spring is surrounding us, and, while any time is a good time to refresh your home decor, there’s nothing quite like this season for a basketful of spirited ideas. Thankfully, it doesn’t take a major remodeling effort to make your home look new. In any room, some spring home decor—some art, some vases with flowers, some new throw pillows—can uplift the feel of a space. It doesn’t have to be expensive or exhausting to give your living room, your kitchen or your bedroom a facelift.
The short answer is, any way you want! Sure, you can replace all your furniture, but the good news is you don’t have to. It’s amazing how much a new area rug, a modern mirror or a splash of color can brighten a place.
Try an imagination exercise, maybe even with your eyes closed. Stand in a room and envision what could be different. Picture the furniture rearranged. Is there a blank or boring wall? Mentally place a new piece of art, a decoration or even a collage in that spot. With your mind’s eye, clear all the knickknacks off a dresser or end table and replace them with new lamps, new vases and new boxes_._ Are you tired of your color scheme? Picture new splotches and swaths of brightness on the floors, the walls, the furnishings.
Seasonal decoration isn’t just for the winter holidays. Every page of the calendar has colors and themes that can provide excitement all year round. And spring may be the most vibrant of all.
With longer days and more light flowing in through your windows, you already have a good start. Here are some other ways you can celebrate the new season.
No color says spring quite like yellow. Think of daffodils, jonquils and yellow tulips. Consider yellow flowerpots, yellow lamps, artwork containing yellow. Pastels are good, too, especially pink and robin’s egg blue. Don’t forget the option of using bright, clean, clear glass in vases, containers and tabletops.
There’s nothing like a sprig of forsythia in a glass vase to announce that spring is here. Any new bloom (or, for that matter, new foliage) in a bright, festive pot is a welcome addition. Hang a new flower painting, and incorporate floral themes in bedding, curtains and flower decorative pillows. Don’t forget spring animals. Bunnies, chicks, ducklings and robins also make good themes.
Work with what you already have. Repaint the walls or touch up a ceiling. But don’t stop there with spring painting. Maybe there are some old chairs or a bookshelf in a child’s room that can pop with a new color. You can even paint mason jars and use them as vases, or pick up a new spring vase that you love. Replace that boring curtain with a floral print. Spread colorful books and magazines across your coffee table. Something as simple as rearranging the furniture can give you and your room a lift.
Perhaps you can keep an entire inventory of spring decor items, and add a little every year. Have a few throw pillows, a spring wreath for the door, or a few bright guest towels that make their appearance when the weather turns fine.
Celebrate spring with different curtains, new wall art and inventive wall fixtures. Artwork with fruit and flower themes puts you in that spring mood. Consider a wall collage or gallery wall: a medley of photographs and other wall decor. Select items that are sentimental for you, or just use pieces that have caught your fancy. You can build a gallery wall above a sofa, or surrounding a desk, or stretch a narrow collage from floor to ceiling.
Hang a new mirror. You may be surprised at what you find in today’s decorative metalwork and geometric shapes. They’re like artwork with a looking glass in the center. Choose a frame to catch other colors in the room. A new wall clock might be just what you need. As artistic as modern mirrors, they’re not just for telling time! Enhance your walls with metal flowers or intricate metallic sculpture.
Coffee tables, end tables, dining tables, desktops, mantels, dressers, counters, beds. All of these are opportunities to spruce up for spring. Set flowers in a clear vase filled with pastel rocks, or another favorite spring-looking vase. Treat yourself to a new tablecloth or table runner. New clocks can go on surfaces as well as on the walls. Table lamps are available in bright colors, inventive styles and with unique artistic bases. You just might find one that calls your name. Use throw blankets. Some are fringed for a playful look. Accent pillows can be square, rectangular or even cylindrical like a giant crayon.
Add some decorative candles. Even when you don’t light them, they, like flowers, bring a seasonal scent to your home.
Try out a new area rug. Swap out a ceiling lamp. You can choose a chandelier, pendant light or other hanging light fixture to shine a whole new light on your space.
The good news is, even a little spring reinvention makes a difference. Do as little or as much as you like. You can splurge on a delightful collection of spring decor, or you can enhance what you already have on hand. If you like what you see, chances are others will too.
