Pantone Names “Ultra Violet” It’s Color of the Year for 2018

It’s that time again. Pantone, a consulting service that forecasts global color trends, has named the 2018 color of the year, and the star of the show is “Ultra-Violet”. The shade marks a vast departure from the 2017 choice, “greenery”, a refreshing and revitalizing hue that focuses on nature, moving the conversation to a more mystical emphasis. According to Pantone’s announcement, the shade of blue-based purple is “a dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade”.

“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level,” said Leatrice Eiseman , executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”

Violet Roots

Pantone notes that the Ultra Violet shade has roots in unconventional art and music, with icons such as David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix bringing the shade to the forefront of pop culture. Purple is also a color near and dear to many Midwestern hearts, thanks to Minnesota’s own Prince. Of course, purple isn’t limited to the arts. Minnesota Vikings fans are ahead of the curve with their long dedication to the purple hue. Many fans may even say the timing is perfect, as the Vikings claim the NFC North Title!

An Ultra-Inspirational Color

Following the announcement, consumers can expect to see a flood of very violet products hitting the market. From makeup, jewelry and clothing to much more, fashion brands and more are proudly displaying their favorite purple picks. You’ll find the “trend-setters”, claiming to have been ahead of the game with their existing purple products. You may also see the Pantone effect, with a crop of new violet products popping up in department stores nationwide.

Home Design

While Pantone’s color of the year announcement is by no means a call to go out and redecorate your entire home, it can provide inspiration for those wanting an update. If the imaginative shade speaks to you, you can look to incorporate the design in your living spaces, bedroom, or even kitchen or bathroom.

Ultra-Violet can add interest to your neutral bedroom.
Wall art is an easy way to incorporate Ultra-Violet into your designs.

Furniture and home design industries are typically slower to adapt trends and bolder colors than the fashion industry. While you may see the purple shade popping up in home furniture showrooms around the country, much will be focused on smaller statement pieces and home accessories. However, there are many ways to add the inventive color other than big statement pieces of furniture. Go ultra-bold by painting a violet focal wall or even selecting a vibrant purple carpet.

Not quite that ready to commit? No problem! You can make a subtler (and less permanent) update by adding the shade in a few accessories, such as wall art, comforters or throws, candles or an easy-to-change-out area rug.
