The 2019 HOM Teal Strides for Ovarian Cancer raised $300,000 for the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance (MOCA). The annual walk/run was held on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Rosland Park in Edina, Minnesota. The 2019 walk/run marked 20 years for the annual event, which is the largest fundraiser for MOCA, and one of the largest ovarian cancer fundraisers nationwide.
More than 2100 people participated in the 2019 event, including survivors of ovarian cancer, friends and families of those impacted by the disease, and healthcare providers. Walking alongside them were HOM Furniture employees, families and friends, along with additional sponsors and community members.
Throughout the years, the annual event has grown to include a kids’ run, lawn games, a race course, live music and additional entertainment. There is also a Survivor’s Tent, where ovarian cancer survivors can gather and receive a special tote bag with a teal ribbon. The full day of activities wraps up with an awards banquet, presented to top males, females and survivors that finished the race.
“Ovarian cancer is a disease that has personally impacted members of our HOM Furniture family, and our work with MOCA throughout the years is dear to the hearts of many of our employees,” said Rod Johansen, President and CEO. “We are proud to continue to support MOCA through this year’s HOM Teal Strides, and honor both survivors and the memories of those who have been lost to this disease.”
In Minnesota alone, nearly 400 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year. MOCA provides support to individuals, families and friends of those affected by ovarian cancer, in part with the funds raised through HOM Teal Strides and additional fundraising efforts.
Additionally, MOCA is dedicated to funding ovarian cancer research and spreading awareness about the symptoms of the disease. There is currently no diagnostic test for ovarian cancer, making research and awareness even more crucial in helping to aid in early detection and prevent future tragedies from this disease.
