Back to Homework Spaces

Create a study space in your home to support your kids' studious endeavors.

Whether you are distance learning from home or creating a homework space, it's important to have a productive study area. Of course, you probably don’t have a dedicated room to turn into an office space for your child. That’s where a study station comes in! Dedicate a corner of their room or turn another nook into a study space with a small desk, supportive chair and spots to organize their homework and school supplies.

Find the Right Space

You can help your child be productive by selecting a room or other study space that puts them in “student mode” right away. Choose a space where the door can be closed and away from any distractions such as a television. When it comes to crunch or test time, this distraction-free space will help them stay focused.

Set Up a Workstation

A perk of being at home is finding the balance between comfort and productivity. If your child plans on taking classes at home for a while or has a lot of homework, you will want to set up a designated workspace that includes a small office desk or a loft bed with a desk. A simple desk with a slide out keyboard area or drawer for supplies may fit well in a small space while still providing ample room for work. Even the smallest of rooms can become a functional space for studying with a loft bed. The space underneath is perfect for a desk and storage, keeping your child comfortable in their own domain. One thing to keep an eye on while studying is your child’s posture. Many office chairs offer adjustable heights, so your rapidly growing youth can adjust the height as needed. Adding a small office chair to the workspace will encourage proper posture and productivity.

Organize the Environment

The key to success is an organized space. Storage bins and shelving will help keep their space tidy, while keeping all the essentials within arm’s reach. Use cute bins and totes to organize the supplies and help the study station stay neat, clutter free and conducive to work. Magnetic whiteboards or cork boards can also be very useful, allowing your child to jot down, save or pin big ideas!

Ensure your child has a bright spot to work with a fun table lamp.

Decorate Your Space

The decor in your study space is important, serving as inspiration for your student. House plants and natural light help with productivity. Add in a desk lamp or floor lamp close by, so your child has ample light to study, even when it gets dark early outside. Don’t forget the floors. A fun rug can help tie together your child’s study nook and bring color into the space. You can also have your child decorate their desk, shelves or walls with their favorite colors through some wall art. This will help brighten the mood while getting them into the studying mode.

By following these simple steps, you can easily build a productive yet comfortable study space that will help you excel through the school year with flying colors.
